riccardo tisci annointed couture’s savior thanks to latest givenchy haute couture collection
Riccardo Tisci and Givenchy opted to show their fall 2010 haute couture collection at a Place Vendome townhouse, presentation style, instead of showing on a runway, this season. While the house floated the rumor that this cost 35% more than staging a runway show (not quite sure this can be believed) it was absolutely the right choice. The clothes were delicate, ethereal and most of all detailed, and they require close inspection to really appreciate them. Some of the garments took over 1600 hours to create, which comes to about 66 days, time consuming to put it lightly. Tisci says that he was inspired by Frida Kahlo (it should be noted that the presentation actually took place on her birthday) and her three obsessions: religion, sensuality and the human skeleton. Classic gothic images of angels were re-interpreted with Chantilly lace, the skeleton was brought to life using clusters of crystals, pearls and lace and sensuality was omnipresent thanks to transparent fabrics and the abundance of flesh tones. It was a studied and thoughtful collection that managed to not seem like an indulgent exercise in workmanship–these clothes are meant to be worn (and its likely stars are already clamoring for a loan or two). Could Tisci be considered couture’s savior? Time will tell.
