celebrity garage sale ‘super saturday’ raises over $3.4 million for ovarian cancer

What does it take to raise over $3.4 million dollars for Ovarian Cancer Research? I found out this weekend when I attended Super Saturday, a cult Hamptons event that is a must attend for the social set every summer. This is the 13th year the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund has held this event in Watermill, originally brought about by Donna Karan and famed Harper’s Bazaar editor Liz Tilberis who contracted Ovarian cancer (she’s since passed away) to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research. Designer’s set up booths, this year’s ranged from Tory Burch, to Brooks Brothers to Dysons Vacume cleaners (this just so happened to be one of the most popular items at the sale, they sold out in hour.)

Of course celebrities usually get in on the action–Kelly Ripa and Twilight’s Ashley Greene hosted this year among others. Stylist Rachel Zoe manned a booth aptly called “Designers A to Zoe” with items from her fashion friends including Oscar de la Renta and Derek Lam–nothing came cheap but pretty much everything was drool worthy. The Kardashian reality-tv family all came out to support the event. Matriarch Kris Jenner sported oversized gold Chanel earrings and a black dress looking a tad out of place and Kardashian baby daddy Scott Disick (whose actually a Hamtpons native) looked right at home in pink pants and a matching pink shirt. The three Kardashian sisters were there too engaging in some serious retail therapy. Yes, I learned, raising money for charity is usually helped along by a little fashion and celebrity ogling (there’s nothing wrong with that if it sells tickets!)

There were also some serious corporate sponsors to help along the event including InStyle, who hosted their own get out of the heat lounge, Essie nailpolish offered manicures (I even got to meet the Essie Weingarten), make your own Crumb’s Cupcakes, and psychic readings. QVC broadcast live from the event for two hours selling wares to at home viewers (a great way to expand the reach of the event).

All in all it was a great Hamptons day for a fantastic cause. As I left, and I saw women hauling massive number of bags brimming with purchases I tried to figure out how much I thought the event had raised. Well the number is right over $3.4 million. Who said shopping was futile?
