sage general store offers haute comfort food in long island city

Sage General Store with a distinct West Village feel, serves comfort food to locals and professionals in burgeoning Long Island City. American folk art is displayed for sale on the walls–perfect eye candy for art goers en route to Moma’s PS1. The menu rotates weekly, featuring only the freshest, seasonal ingredients.

Breakfast and lunch are focal points, with a selection of traditional favorites, but also creative fare. During my visit brunch was on point with fabulous thick, batter-dipped French toast served with whipped cream, maple syrup and fresh fruit. Sage has also perfected Tex-Mex, with its unique chilaquile dish–layered corn tortillas are tossed with tender chicken and doused in a spicy, tomatillo sauce, drizzled with queso blanco, paired with ricotta salata, and topped with a fried egg. Beverage selections include Aztec hot chocolate with Jack Daniels whipped cream and ginger-mint iced tea with honey.

Saturday and Sunday feature Sage’s Bacon Brunch–3 courses for $25 of bacon heaven with variations on home-style cooking. It includes a bacon trio sampling, glorified grilled cheese with pepper bacon, creamy five-cheese casserole with bacon and a double chocolate bacon brownie with Jack Daniels whipped cream.
