boston’s grotto is an intimate hideaway

Climb down a set of stone stairs into a nondescript door to find a charming and romantic restaurant serving contemporary, Italian fare. Grotto is small and intimate, lined with red, brick walls and covered with creative, local artwork.

Not only is the food divine, but also can be enjoyed as a 3-course prix fix for the bargain of $34. Not one dish disappointed. For appetizers try the grilled calamari steak with a white bean puree, peppers, lemon and greens or the Fontina cheese fondue. As for mains, the house specialty is potato gnocchi with short ribs, mushrooms and gorgonzola. A slightly lighter dish is fresh linguine, with poached lobster, in a spicy tomato sauce. If you can manage to squeeze in desert the banana bread pudding with caramel sauce, caramel ice cream and spice nuts will warm your soul during the winter blues.
