view from the front row’s spring 2011 picks

With the spring 2011 collection previews wrapping up, the View From the Front Row team has compiled our favorites from the season–from the bags we want to be wearing come spring, to the rising stars we are keeping an eye on, to the gowns that we would die to own.

Leah Bourne, Editor-in-Chief (@fromthefrontrow)

Favorite Collection: Prada. From the kooky striped heels, to the furs worn as hand held accessories, to the electric colors (thank you fashion gods) this collection was an excersize in fun. Miuccia Prada calls the collection “minimal baroque” and I call it just downright fabulous.

Up-and-Comer To Watch: Hakaan. Models have a keen eye for talent and the fact that Daria, Natalia and Mariacarla walked in Hakaan Yildirim’s show says something (and believe me, they likely weren’t paid in anything but clothes). Hakaan is all about fitted minimalism, and a clean color palette. This was the first time Hakaan had shown in Paris (last season he showed in London) and his Palais de Tokyo show was jam packed with all of the editors that matter. That aside, Hakaan creates clothes that women will aspire to wear (I know that because I am one of them).

Must Have Accessory: Phoebe Philo has a knack for turning out “it” accessories at Celine. I’m betting that this oversized clutch from spring 2011 will be a must have as the weather turns warm (and I love that it has a seasonless feel to it).

Standout Fashion Week Moment: Seeing Kylie Minogue sing “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” at Roberto Cavalli’s 40th anniversary party at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Basically my equivalent of fashion heaven.

Would Most Likely Sell My First Born For: Every season I just about double over looking Nicholas Kirkwood for Rodarte shoes, and this season was no exception. Baroque and modern simultaneously, these shoes are on my must have list for spring. Now I just have to figure out how to pay for them.

Favorite Collection: Jil Sander was my absolute favorite. Those amazingly rich colors and thick hardy stripes–spectacular.

Up-and-Comer To Watch: Chris Benz. He’s one of the only new high fashion designers I actually like. He creates such vibrant, playful and colorful clothes.

Must Have Accessory: I love the primary colored bags at Prada. Fun and fantastical.

Standout Fashion Week Moment: Seeing Kelly Osbourne looking healthy, gorgeous and amazing at so many of the New York shows. See Lindsay, there’s hope for you too.

Would Most Likely Sell My First Born For: The Prada Chaquita Banana white dress. Even if I can’t wear it myself, it makes me want to head to the beach with a piña colada.

Favorite Collection: Derek Lam. His sensibility is so chic and I loved the nod to the 1970s with long gowns and wide leg denim pants.

Up-and-Comer To Watch: Honor. This new collection is like the dessert of fashion. So precious and pretty, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this label.

Standout Fashion Week Moment: Congradulating my friends Kathryn and Lizzie Fortunato at the Suno presentation for their hit jewelry collaboration.

Would Most Likely Sell My First Born For: The Valentino long sheer dress with black trim and black and white stars. I want. I need. I have to have.

Favorite Collection: Jason Wu. He definitely stepped out from under the Michelle Obama security blanket by presenting a strong  and sexy collection that no longer made me think he was just placed on this earth to dress our president’s wife. His entire collection was complex, endearing and altogether fitting for the modern day business woman. Every single piece combines the perfect formula of masculine and feminine, seductive and sophisticated and flirty and serious. To top it off, his color selection was dead on–regal and bold–from golds to rich blues and purples.

Up-and-Comer To Watch: Wes Gordon. I love his 1950s Ad Girl meets the modern day Hamptons aesthetic. Every piece he showed is versatile–his crop paint suits can easily be worn to work or to a garden party. My ultimate favorite look in the collection was the transparent crop green and white blouse paired with high-waisted wide leg trousers.

Must Have Accessory: I’m obsessed with flat-platform wedges (otherwise known as flatforms) shown on many runways including Fendi and Chanel. I have been rocking flat-wedges for years now because of my almost legally handicapped height and I have been called a nerd for years, so I am overjoyed to see they are in style for spring. Gals, this is the secret to adding height without numbing your toes.

Standout Fashion Week Moment: When Karl Lagerfeld’s boytoy Brad Kroenig came out on the Chanel runway with his son in jeans and matching Chanel jackets. I might just need to birth a little boy so that I can dress him in Chanel. Be still my heart.

Would Most Likely Sell My First Born For: I would die for a Marchesa gown, any one will do. I would debut it anywhere, even to the grocery store if need be, just so I can prance around in it.

What is your favorite collection, and what are you dying over from the spring 2011 collections? We’d love to hear from you in the comments section!
